Visit to San Juan Museum of Art and City Tour All Day Version
Tour Description:
You will leave your hotel and head into a part of new San Juan where the San Juan Art Museum is located. This major museum opened in the spring of 2000. The exhibits feature masterpieces produced by Puerto Rico's world-class artists over the last 500 years. Puerto Rico's artistic tradition - painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, folk art, photography and other contemporary media - is nearly 500 years old. The non-profit Museum supports this dynamic tradition by collecting, exhibiting and interpreting art. At the same time, the museum fosters awareness of other art traditions from Latin America and the re-mainder of the world. Galleries in the West Wing display the Museum's permanent collection and loans of Puerto Rican art from colonial times to the present in changing exhibitions.
On the fourth floor over 10,000 square feet of galleries for temporary exhibitions surround the atrium. Recent exhibitions include Puerto Rico art through Time, a historical presentation from the 18th century until today; Contemporary Art from Japan, a selection of recent work by young Japanese artists; and Kandinsky and the Russian Avant Garde, 51 works by Kandinsky and his contemporaries from a pivotal period in Western art. (These exhibits are of course changed from time to time).
Following your morning visit you will head into old San Juan, driving through newer parts of town like the Condado area, a former key tourism zone, and now kind of like South Beach in Miami before it was renovated, across the Two Brothers bridge, past Fort San Gerσnimo and on into Old San Juan, one of the most beautiful old cities in the New World, and filming location for big-budget movies starring such luminaries as Steven Seagal, Kurt Russell Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone.
Your first stop is for a short visit to Fort San Cristobal, a mainstay of the San Juan fortification system, from which the Spanish successfully defended their city from British and Dutch attacks as well as frequent assaults from various and sundry pirates. Be sure to watch their historical video on the area.
Youll see the beautiful 17th century Spanish ironwork on the restored homes and note the blue-black glazed cobblestones that were brought to San Juan as ballast for the Spanish galleons, and were used to line the narrow streets of the Old City. In addition, you will have time to explore some of the many interesting shops, boutiques and art galleries that have made this historic area their home.
Please note: As of March, 2004, access to the northern more scenic road of Norzagaray Street has been limited to small vans or cars. Larger capacity vehicles must take the more direct road of San Francisco. While this has not affected the tour greatly, it does limit some of the more interesting views.
Luncheon can be arranged at El Convento Hotel or can be on own with a cash allowance which is what most incentive groups do. Luncheon costs would start in the mid $30.00 range.
