Las Cabezas
Located on a peninsula, this nature reserve encompasses 316 acres of land plus 124 acres of lagoons. It contains all of Puerto Rico's ecosystems except for the rain forest. A two-hour guided tour will take you through a half-mile-long coral reef, mangrove swamps, beaches, a dry forest, and beds of turtle grass (thalassia). A highlight is El Faro, a lighthouse built in 1880 and still used by the U.S. Coast Guard. The small nature center in the lighthouse, which is a designated National Historic Place, has touch tanks, aquariums, and an observation deck. Bilingual tours are at 9:30 AM, 10 AM, and 10:30 AM; there is one at 2 PM in English only.
