Deap Sea Fishing

The waters around Puerto Rico boast some excellent fishing. There are a number of Deep Sea Fishing tournaments being held here, in which at least 30 world records have been broken. The Annual Billfish Tournament, held in September in Puerto Rico, is the world’s largest consecutively held tournament of its kind and the key attraction each year at that tournament is big blue marlin.

In the clear, blue waters off Puerto Rico, there are an abundance of blue and white marlin, bonito, alba-core, Allison tuna, jack, king, dolphin (mahi-mahi), sailfish, and wahoo. Big blue marlins are most plenti-ful in the fall, however can be caught in any month of the year. In the spring the catch will tend more to-wards tuna, bonito and dolphin.

Tackle, gear and refreshments are included on board each boat. Many of the boats are elegantly fin-ished, normally with an air-conditioned interior, sometimes boasting lustrous teak cabinetry and rich car-peting. All this is equaled only by the excellent fishing equipment found on board. While accommodat-ing six persons on each boat, four can actually fish at one time. Whichever boat you choose, the cap-tain and crew will make this a memorable and thrilling experience for any avid fisherman, from the mo-ment you step aboard.

Deep Sea Fishing boats are available for charter in San Juan and in Fajardo, close to such fine resorts as the Westin Rio Mar and the El Conquistador. In general, the boat charters from San Juan are less costly than those boats that depart from the east coast marinas near the Conquistador. The probability of catching fish is probably greater, on a half day charter, from San Juan, due to the closeness of the 100 fathom curve which fishermen like to follow – out of Fajardo it takes longer to get out to the curve, so less time is able to be spent in actual fishing.
