Golfing
Puerto Rico has some of the best golf courses anywhere in the Caribbean: they are both beautiful in their setting as well as challenging. Balmy weather and the constant trade winds make for the most ideal playing conditions – there is per-fect golf weather almost every day of the year.
Virtually all of the courses are of championship caliber, created by some of the world’s best golf course designers. There are 10 professionally designed championship courses along with 5 other challenging greens that dot the country-side, giving Puerto Rico the distinction of being known as the “Scotland in the Sun”.
HYATT DORADO BEACH
In 1958, Laurence Rockefeller opened this resort, with two Robert Trent Jones courses. The East course is the longest – 6,985 yards from the back, par 72. Try tackling the famous 13th hole. A par 5 of 540 yards, it winds around two ponds and finishes just off the Atlantic Ocean. The fairways at the West are just as beautifully manicured, though a bit shorter, at 6,913 yards.
HYATT PLANTATION
These courses are not quite as difficult. They are built on coastal plains and are therefore a bit more sheltered. The South course is 7,047 yards and the North is 6,841 yards. The four courses(Dorado Beach and Cerromar) are considered among the 25 best that Robert Trent Jones ever created.
COCO BEACH
The only course in Puerto Rico that provides you with the opportunity to play four different nine hole courses. The nines of choice are mountain (opening soon), Ocean, Lake and Palm course. Each course is exciting and different from the next nine and will test any level of skill. The course was designed by PGA tour profes-sional Tim Kite along with Willowbend’s Bruce Besse.
WESTIN RÍO MAR
These courses are about an hour out of San Juan, in Río Grande, featuring a challenging Ocean Course designed by Tom & George Fazio. At 6,875 yards, par 72, the course is narrow, with water everywhere, as well as constant winds. The 6,900 yard, par 72, River Course was designed by Greg Norman and both courses remain Puerto Rico’s best conditioned.*
EL CONQUISTADOR
Truly a must play. The course is carved out of the mountainside with spectacular views. Some fairways are hidden, so you must trust your game and aim at a target. The trick to the golf course is to play it at least twice. Many hidden shots and once you know your targets the course becomes more fun. Opened in 1994, designed by Arthur Hills, 6662 yards, Par 72 with a USGA raging of 72.5 – 70.9 – 70.1
