Shopping Transfers to Plaza Las Americas

As the largest shopping center in the Caribbean., Plaza las Américas is nothing less than an institution in Puerto Rican society, going beyond being a shopping mall to an important social, cultural and artistic center. Plaza Las Américas currently positions itself as the ideal place to shop, eat and seek entertainment. Anchored by JC Penney, Sears and the island’s only Macy’s, “Plaza” houses over 300 stores, 21 cinemas, 25 eateries and popular theme restaurants. Hours: Mon. - Sat, 9am - 9pm, Sundays 11am - 5pm.
The Story of the Medallions
Throughout Plaza Las Américas you will find six art medallions designed by three great Puerto Ri-can artists: Myrna Báez, Nick Quijano and Marta Pérez García. In fact, you might walk over them unwittingly, as you may be distracted by any of the gigantic sculptures that hang from the ceiling, as if suspended in mid air, and which were created by sculptor Jo Schneider. Together, the medallions and the sculptures represent a celebration of our island. But each one of them communicates its very own message. Made out of resin and marble, the creation of the me-dallions presented a special challenge to three Puerto Rican artists, since they had never worked on a project such as this one. Five of the medallions are 10 feet in diameter and the sixth—the me-dallion in the Great Central Atrium that celebrates the encounter between Christopher Columbus and the Taíno Indian—is 12 feet in diameter. All were designed by Puerto Rican artists and repro-duced in terrazo by the company Artistic Surfaces.
