Tarpon Fishing in San Jose Lagoon
If you are not up for deep sea fishing, light tackle fishing for tarpon and snook in the islands bays and lagoons is an exciting alternative. Sport Fishing Magazine ran a great article plus devoted their December cover to this growing sport and we felt we had to try it. We went out with Till Brauer, one of the top local guides, on his flats boat and had a magnificent day. Till picked us up at the marina dock at 6:00 AM after having already gone out and capturing the live baitfish that would be used. Within two seconds of the first cast we had a 20-pound tar-pon on 8-pound line and a fifteen-minute fight ensued. There were many more hookups during the morning, and several fish brought to the boat and released. And as an extra treat we found a section of mangrove-lined canal that swarmed with huge iguanas sunning themselves. There are currently three boats that are available on a daily basis and each can take a maximum of three persons. The morning trip goes out from 0600-1000. And that 20 pounder we hooked was small compared to the average; they run as big as 100 pounds with some regularity.
